Lilongwe- Dr. Banda hails clergy Netball, Football Bonanza as a “Service of Love and Solidality”

Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Rev. Dr. Alick Banda, has lauded the spirit of unity and compassion that defined the Association of the Diocesan Catholic Clergy of Lilongwe (ADCCOLL) Netball/Football Fundraising Bonanza. The event was organized in support of the Likuni Parish Retirement Center and Infirmary.
Speaking at the event held at Malawi Police Headquarters in Area 30, Dr. Banda described the bonanza as more than just a sporting activity, calling it a true service of love, care, and solidarity, as it aims to help complete a home dedicated to the care of sick and elderly priests.
“The Likuni Parish Retirement Center and Infirmary, which we are fundraising for today, is not merely a physical structure- it is a home of love, a sanctuary of rest, and a house of prayer for those who have laboured in the Lord’s vineyard,” he said.
The fundraising bonanza also featured a football match between the Archdiocese of Lilongwe Diocesan Priests and the Catholic Men’s Association.
It was preceded by a Eucharistic celebration during which Dr. Banda, in his homily, invoked blessings and sought the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the successful completion of the project.
Quoting Hebrews 6:10, he reminded the faithful that God remembers and honours acts of service.
Dr. Banda, accompanied by the Archbishop of Lilongwe, Most Rev. George Tambala, Auxiliary Bishop Vincent, auxiliary of Lilongwe and Bishop Johannes, Bishop of Muzuzu concluded by calling for continued support, emphasizing that the needs of priests remain ongoing.
“Let us remember that our work does not end here,” he said. “Together, we can ensure that our priests—who have given so much—receive the care and honour they deserve.”
The Archbishop’s words resonated deeply with faithful, framing the day not just as a sporting occasion, but as a meaningful expression of mission and gratitude.
