Mission Sunday: A Grace-Filled Day for the Archdiocese of Lusaka

...Five bishops undertake pastoral activities across Lusaka

The Archdiocese of Lusaka experienced a moment of profound grace and unity on Mission Sunday as five bishops undertook pastoral activities across four different locations. The day was marked by prayer, celebration, and a renewed sense of missionary commitment within the local Church.

The Archdiocese was honoured to have the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia and Malawi, His Excellency Gian Luca Perici, Archbishop Emeritus- Telesphore Mpundu, Archbishop of Lusaka- Most Rev. Dr. Alick Banda, Archbishop of Lilongwe- Most Rev. George Tambala and Auxiliary Bishop of Turin, Poland, Bishop Joseph Szamocki.

The Apostolic Nuncio began the day at the Francis Xavier Jesuit Novitiate, where he celebrated Mass and paid a fraternal visit to Archbishop Emeritus Mpundu, who continues to offer his invaluable prayers for the growth and strength of the Church.

At the Proto Cathedral of Roma Mary the Assumption, Archbishop Tambala presided over a solemn Eucharistic celebration, inspiring the faithful with a message of hope and renewed commitment to the mission of Christ.

In Mandevu, Bishop Szamocki, former Parish Priest of Holy Family, joined the community in celebrating its golden jubilee. The celebration began with confirmation Mass, during which he conferred the sacrament upon 145 candidates, encouraging them to be courageous and active witnesses of the faith.

Simultaneously, Archbishop Banda was at St. Peter’s Parish in Garden, where he confirmed 178 candidates. In his homily, he urged them to be rooted in faith and mission.

“My dear confirmandees, as we pray for each and every one of you, we want you to be empowered so that as we celebrate this great day, the World Mission Sunday, you can equally participate in that great mission of the Church of preaching the word of God,” he said.

This widespread pastoral presence was a powerful sign of communion and vitality in the Archdiocese of Lusaka. Indeed, Mission Sunday became not just a celebration, but a living testimony of a growing and vibrant faith community. To God be all the glory.
