…Archbishop Banda launches 2026 Jubilee, urges priests to stand with the poor

Archbishop Alick Banda has called on priests and the faithful to embrace Christ's mission of healing, liberation, and support for the marginalized as the Archdiocese of Lusaka (ADL) introduced the 2026 pastoral theme, “Jubilee of St. Francis of Assisi – Year of Human Family and Family of Creation: Harmony for Peace.”

In his homily during the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus, Dr. Banda stressed that the Church's mission should go beyond words and be shown through real acts of compassion.

“Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action,” he quoted St. John.

Chrism Mass is a solemn yearly service where priests renew their vows and bless the oils used in sacraments (Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism Oil).

Archbishop Banda said the oils are not just symbols but sacramental signs of the Holy Spirit's power at work in people’s lives.

Reflecting on Scripture, he compared the suffering of Israel in exile to today's society, which faces inequality, poverty, and misinformation.

He emphasized that Jesus Christ stands with the poor and marginalized and calls His followers to do the same.

“In a world where might is right, Jesus Christ is on the same side as the poor. He invites us to follow His example,” he said.

The Archbishop encouraged priests to never become indifferent to the struggles of the vulnerable, describing clergy as shepherds who “reek of the sheep,” sharing in their communities' challenges.

He also thanked the laity and consecrated men and women for their dedication to the Church despite obstacles, assuring them that God never abandons His people and they should always hold onto hope for a better tomorrow.

The Jubilee theme, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, emphasizes harmony among the human family and creation as a way to peace. Archbishop Banda concluded by urging the faithful to show God's loving presence through service, solidarity, and hope.
